If I could describe 2017 in one sentence it would be this… Two thousand and seventeen was a year of discovering myself, intentionally and unintentionally.
I had some first, some last and even some milestone moments. I cried a little and I laughed a lot. I doubted myself and believed in myself. I quit in my mind and started again. I took breaks from work and I fell in love with my husband all over again.
Erica, Tomika & Sierra are the beauties & the brains behind All Things Natural Hair. The three of them saw a need for more local events in the Upstate area of South Carolina for Natural Hair Women & Men. Instead of talking about it and wishing for one to come to the area they decided to create the very thing that was missing. WIthin 4 months the event was live and it sold out in under two weeks. When its meant to be its meant to be.
I had the pleasure a few months back to work with Kesha Lewis on her personal branding photography. Kesha is a beautiful human, an amazing mother, and a dear friend. Kesha and I met about 4 years ago at a job I used to work at. She was one of the trainers at the time. We connected almost immediately. Not too long after starting this job I got another opportunity and left that company. We continued to keep in touch over the years. So when she reached out to me to do her headshots and branding photos I was so thrilled.
I have loved photography since I was a kid. Seeing all of the photo albums that my grandmother kept and the tons of pictures she had on her mantel. I was surrounded by it at an early age. In High School I was the girl that always had a disposable camera in hand. I loved taking pictures of and with my friends. I always wanted my very own polaroid but I never got one. Lucky for me they are making a come back. Putting the Instax on my wish list.
During my college bound series I will cover several topics. As a senior photographer I see many kids who are heading off to college for the first time and many stressed out parents. I also have 2 daughters in college currently. So, I know exactly how they feel. As a lot of parents are getting ready to send their kids off to college I want to help out where I can, especially since I had to wing it my first year as a college mom. I am providing a list of items you will definitely want to put on your grads wishlist. Trunk 7 Grad parties are even better when your guest know exactly what to buy. So create them a wish list at my favorite store Target. If you prefer Walmart and even Bed Bath & Beyond these are excellent choices as well.
So, we are knocking these months out left and right. January is OVER and February's end has come and gone. March pretty much speed by. We leaped past April and here we land in May. Can you believe we are almost in the sixth month of the year? Originally I wanted to bring this reflection at the end of the first quarter but here we are. This is me acting in one of my lessons moving forward even when you fall off the wagon.
What they are? PODs are a way for you to "hack" the system and increase the chances of your post being seen by your followers. Its a group of individuals who comment and like each others post consistently as soon as they go up.
Contrary to my title in the moment I was super excited to find my tribe, my sisters, my community! That was until I realized what really comes with finding your tribe. From personal experience, trust me, it's not for everyone. After testing the waters in this whole #communityovercompetition life, let me tell you, I have a few reasons why you should stay solo. I mean come on... Do yourself a favor and just don't do it.
I posted the image below to my Instagram on January 8th. I had been on the phone with a friend discussing goals and being productive. We always bounce ideas off of each other, on this day I was talking about how I had been struggling with blogging on a consistent basis.
If you aren't sure why people like myself choose a word of the year let me explain. Well, at least why "I" chose to pick a new word each year. For me, it has more to do with focus & mindfulness than anything else. I am a person that usually has a thousand ideas and then on a regular basis new ideas come to me. As someone that stays curious and thrives on exploring and discovering new things, it's really easy for me to lose focus on what my overall goal was and the reason WHY I even picked that goal, to begin with. Having a word or phrase that I can always come back to helps me to make better decisions on when I should start a new project versus tabling it for a future date. My desire this year is to ask myself if opportunities and projects are in alignment with my word(s) and decide yay or nay from there.
From the time I was old enough to operate a stove by myself, I was in the kitchen cooking. My mom would call me after school from work and ask me if the meat she took out for dinner had thawed out. I would tell her yes, which would almost always be followed up by"Great, go ahead and get dinner started." That is how I learned how to cook.
Time doesn't heal all wounds, patience isn't the act of doing nothing, busy isn't productive and life is not meant to be perfect. It's meant to be lived, over and over again. For me life is cyclical. It is the ebbs and flows of joy and sadness, inspiration and procrastination, fulfillment and searching for purpose. While you are on these different cycles of life use these tool to manage your way through them. Take note of what you learn and apply it and marvel at your growth as the next flow comes around.
