Wednesday Words of Gratitude: Building a Community

Welcome to Wednesday Words of Gratitude. Every Wednesday I will highlight one thing from the week prior that I am grateful for. The purpose is so that I can have a way to reflect at the end of year on all the many GOOD things that happened. It will help me stay motivated and hopefully inspires others to track little and big things they are grateful for. This week's first installment is all about Community. I decided late last year that I was going to move from hobby to career with my photography. In the beginning it was really lonely. I didn’t have anyone in my immediate circle that was a photographer. The journey quickly became a little lonely. Also, I am not from South Carolina originally so my network of people wasn’t large either.

Recently a photographer named Latoya Dixon reached out to me on Facebook and invited me to her Photography group. It's a community of talented women of color photographers, videographers, and other creatives in the state of South Carolina called The Queen PhotograpHers of SC.

I was immediately excited but at the same time worried because it was all so new for me. These women were all very experienced or have been working professionally for years. Some even have college training. Then there is me the 36 year old wife and mother of 6 who is just starting out.

I soon found out that none of my insecurities mattered. They are all really supportive and helpful. I was even more excited when the invite came out about the Saturday Vision Board Party. Knowing no one personally I still committed to going. I am so glad I did. I am so grateful to have a community of PhotograpHers that I identify with.

The meetup was for the woman in our specific area of SC. The others that live a little further away are having a separate meetup. There were 7 of us there. All different ages, at different places in our life and at different levels of photography. We have some similar and different niche’s of photography. None of the differences mattered. There was a mutual respect for everyone's dream. A genuine want to help each other and be supportive.

Overall I am grateful for the possibilities that this group has. It's such a great feeling to be apart of a community of like minded women. With all that we have planned this year, I imagine great things to come.

One of the words I placed on my vision board is “Community”. This is not by accident. This was strategic. It’s so easy to not trust others, not ask for help and rely solely on yourself. In 2016 I plan on getting involved. Not being afraid to ask for help. Sharing and providing resources where I can. Really getting involved 100%.

This photography community is one of a few I am involved in. I have one that fills my spiritual needs, one that inspires me daily to be great & one to hold me accountable to reach my goals. It may sound like a lot but they all serve a purpose in my life. I even have a small fitbit & walking community.

I want to encourage you to write one thing you are grateful for each day. You can do this as a note in your planner or journal. You can take it digital and post it to Facebook or Twitter if you like. There is no right or wrong way.

It's your turn, tell me what are you grateful for? Do you have a community you are blessed to be apart of? Do you need help finding one? Let me know and I will work with you to find one. There are so many amazing FB groups. There is bound to be a great one just for you.
